Understanding Your Courier Earnings

The amount you're paid for a delivery isn't necessarily what you earn. Fuel, vehicle maintenance, insurance and other expenses can make a significant difference to how profitable a courier job really is.

Our calculator helps you understand the following:

  • Total revenue: Your delivery fee plus any additional income from backloads.
  • Fuel cost: Estimated using your total mileage, UK MPG and fuel price per litre.
  • Total costs: Fuel, food, accommodation, other job expenses and any overheads you've allocated.
  • Estimated profit before tax: The amount remaining after deducting the expenses you've entered, before Income Tax and National Insurance.
  • Profit per mile: Your estimated profit divided by the total distance driven, including empty return journeys.
  • Profit per hour: Your estimated profit divided by the total hours worked.
  • Revenue per loaded mile: Your total revenue divided by the miles driven with a load.

Don't Forget Your Running Costs

One of the biggest mistakes self-employed couriers make is focusing on the delivery fee without considering the full cost of operating their vehicle.

Servicing, tyres, repairs, insurance, vehicle depreciation and unpaid driving time can all reduce your actual earnings. For a realistic estimate, include an appropriate share of these expenses in the calculator.
